A symbol of the mountains, the marmot is a small mammal recognizable by its stocky body, short legs, and thick fur. It can be found in alpine meadows, where it digs vast burrows connected by underground tunnels.
An herbivore, it feeds on grasses, flowers, and roots, which it sometimes stores before winter. Surprisingly, marmots hibernate for nearly six months, huddled with other members of their colony to conserve warmth. Very watchful, it emits a sharp whistle to alert its fellow marmots in case of danger, before retreating into its burrow.
