Mystique is the mutant Raven Darkholme, who learned from a very young age to control her mutant gift of transmutation, and can always maintain a disguised appearance. Unable to show her true face for fear of discrimination, Mystique has become a master at manipulating people and lying to ensure her survival with humans. But using her powers for humanity proved more and more difficult and with each failure she became more frustrated and angry. As a result, she came to believe that humanity was her archenemy. Thus, Mystique came to act as a mercenary, working for Hydra and, later, being responsible for the second formation of the Brotherhood of Mutants, which gained notoriety when trying to assassinate Senator Robert Kelly, an anti-mutant activist.
