Superman is een Amerikaanse stripfiguur, een superheld en soms ook een superschurk, afkomstig uit het fictieve DC Universe. Dit personage wordt beschouwd als een Amerikaans cultureel icoon.
Het personage werd in januari 1933 bedacht door de Amerikaanse schrijver Jerry Siegel en de Canadese tekenaar Joe Shuster, die beiden in Cleveland woonden. Het werd verkocht aan Detective Comics. Zijn eerste verschijning was in Action Comics in juni 1938. Vervolgens was het personage te zien in talloze hoorspelen, televisieprogramma's, films, stripverhalen en videogames. Gezien het succes en de populariteit van zijn avonturen, is Superman essentieel voor de ontwikkeling van een eigen superheldengenre.
